Getting there and away
Luang Prabang is situated in the north of Laos. It’s accessible by plane, bus or boat.
From Thailand there are two main border crossings. One is the Nongkhai border crossing from northeast Thailand into Laos across the friendship bridge and a 40 minutes bus ride into the capital city Vientiane. There you can take a private bus lasting 10 hours or a local bus 12 hours to Luang Prabang. The second border crossing is via the town of Chiang Khong crossing into Huay Xai on the Laos side and then a slow boat for 2 days along the Mekong river - the most common way to Luang Prabang, or a 7 hour bus ride to Luang Namtha and another bus to Luang Prabang.
By plane there is an international airport 5 kilometers from town where there are many direct flights from abroad. Lao airlines www.laoairlines.com operates daily flights from/to Cambodia and Thailand.
